The 2010 Sensibility is the first iteration of this cuvée at Epoch, and it was Jordan Fiorentini's first year as winemaker. "It was a really cool vintage," she recalls. "It was foggy, and we got rain during the season. We didn't pick until November 10-11, but we got a lot of hang time." A blend of 75% Grenache, 22% Mourvedre and 3% Syrah, aged 18 months in French oak, it has a pale garnet color and is still offering up wild berry fruits on the nose, with bass tones of mushroom, earth, gravel dust and dried mint. The palate is supple and silky, with earth and spice tones lingering on the finish. It's a mature wine that still offers appeal but should be drunk within the next few years. 81 cases were made.

(75% grenache, 22% mourvedre and 3% syrah; 15.9% alcohol): Opaque ruby. Spice-accented redcurrant, cherry, cassis and pipe tobacco on the intensely perfumed nose, with a floral nuance emerging with air. Sweet red berry and cherry compote flavors offer excellent depth as well as vivacity, with fine-grained tannins and firm acidity lending cut and shape. Smoky cherry and bitter chocolate nuances carry through the long, chewy finish, which features youthfully firm tannins and a hint of white pepper. Definitely give this wine some bottle age.
Layers of ripe dark red fruit followed by more exotic notes of orange peel and sweet spices flow from the 2010 Sensibility. This is a decidedly more flashy style, partly because of the aging in relatively new French oak puncheons. With time in the glass, the wine shows off striking inner perfume and serious density. The blend is 75% Grenache, 22% Mourvèdre and 3% Syrah.
A gorgeous wine and one of the top Grenache blends coming out of California today, the 2010 Epoch Estate Wines Sensibility Paderewski Vineyard – named after the Jane Austen novel Sense and Sensibility - is a blend of 75% Grenache, 22% Mourvedre, and 3% Syrah that was aged all in neutral puncheons. It offers a perfumed, sweet array of creamy black raspberry, licorice, spiced meat, and big minerality to go with a full-bodied, seamless, and beautifully textured mouth feel. Building in richness and depth over the evening and possessing an elegant, pure character, it should thrill for 5-8 years, possibly longer.
