Punteggio 94/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, Dec 2017

Tasted out of bottle, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain is another black/blue colored beauty that gives up a sweet bouquet of plums, blueberries, lots of gravelly minerality and hints of chocolate. It's rich, full-bodied and opulent on the palate, has tons of tannin and is balanced and long. Give bottles 4-5 years and drink through 2045. One of the eye-opening tastings while working on this report was the lineup from Kathryn Hall’s estate located in St. Helena. There’s a wealth of wines here, yet they all have deep, concentrated, pure profiles as well as singular characters. You could pretty much randomly select from this lineup and be guaranteed to have a brilliant wine. Hats off to winemaker Steve Leveque. All the 2016s, and the majority of the 2015s, were tasted as barrel samples.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain opens with expressive crème de cassis, mocha and tilled soil notes with hints of blueberry compote, dried bay leaves and truffles, plus a touch of black olives. Big, voluptuous, full-bodied and full-on sexy in the mouth, it struts a lot of spicy fruit with plush tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with great length.

The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain is slightly more muted than the Bergfeld, with a powdered rock character giving it minerality, slightly more structure and tannins, and a backward feel, but the fruit is there, as is the full body and the purity. This should turn out to be first class, but it is one of the more reticent 2015s from Hall.

The Hall 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon (Diamond Mountain) is rich, unctuous and super-concentrated. Blackberry jam, dark spices, crème de cassis, new oak, new leather and cloves give the wine its jammy, unctuous personality. Rich and flamboyant to the core, the 2015 exudes power. Today, the Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the most expressive wines in the range.
