Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2022-2036, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Jun 2022

Relatively high alcohol for the vintage, reflective of the terroir and the winemaking style. This is deeper and richer in flavour that its sibling estate Croix de Gay, and is still very much in play, showcasing cranberry, raspberry, red cherry and greengage plums, with fresh acidities balanced out by campfire and cold ash. Standing on the precipice of tertiary, fine but firm tannins. Tons of liqourice, and a bitter almond and aniseed kick through the finish. At a gorgeous momet to drink with all the pleasures of an older wine, and it was still delivering after 24 hours of opening. Classic, old school, a different era of winemaking, but it has character and presence. A great label also that tells you how many bottles, half bottles, magnums, double magnums and imperials. Owned (at the time) by Alain Raynaud, now by his sister Chantal Lebreton. 100% new oak.

The 2005 Fleur de Gay offers up dark cherry, plum, chocolate, new leather, licorice and smoke. Slightly fraying at the edges, the 2005 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later.

Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Lightly meaty on the nose. Transparent and juicy. Maybe not that serious but extremely ‘pleasant’ and fresh. (JR)
