Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2022-2031, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017

Bright medium red. Ripe, pure scents of raspberry, spices and smoky minerality. Silky-sweet on entry, then savory and intense in the middle palate, showing a distinctly penetrating quality to its raspberry and crushed-stone flavors. Finishes with a firm tannic spine and good mineral extension but no hardness. A classic 2014 in the way it combines inner-mouth tension, fine-grained texture and density. This wine will offer early sex appeal but it would be a shame not to give it at least a few years in bottle to expand.

Mid crimson. Really good perfume and structure. A purist’s red burgundy with real raciness and masses of fruit. (JR)

(sulfited two weeks before my visit):Deep ruby-red. Black raspberry, crushed stone and a suggestion of licorice on the nose. Very tight and sharply delineated, with dark fruit flavors accented by peppery herbs and supported by a strong rocky underpinning. Still a bit hardened by the recent sulfur addition, but Lignier notes that this wine is always in a distinctly upright, linear style in its youth. Potentially long-lived; I may be underrating this wine.

The 2014 Morey St Denis 1er Cru les Chaffots, from vines between 40- and 50-years-old, has a slightly rustic nose but there is plenty of energy here, a touch of wild heather tincturing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, succulent tannin. There is fine tension, quite citric in the mouth with a vibrant tart cherry finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine.
