Punteggio 89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2006

(bottled in November of 2004) Saturated red-ruby. Superripe aromas of black cherry, earth and leather are just short of roasted. Dense and chocolatey, with a heaviness this wine did not show in barrel. Deep and broad but dry, without real sweetness of fruit. Finishes with huge but ripe tannins, and chocolate and leather notes. Shows the surmaturite of the vintage more obviously than a number of Girardin's other 2003s.

Bursting with black cherry aromas, the superb 2003 Charmes-Chambertin is ample, rich, sweet, and lush. This powerful medium to full-bodied wine regales the palate with candied red cherries as well as spices. Sappy and chewy, it is friendly, packed with fruit, flawlessly ripened, and displays a long, supple finish.

This is stylistically completely different with an elegant, nicely pure and refined red berry fruit nose that is ripe but no where near as ripe as the Clos de la Roche. The plum-infused, slightly jammy medium full flavors are precise, sweet and persistent and display particularly good finishing complexity. Lovely stuff with moderate cellar potential.
