Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2017-2025, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Dec 2016

Black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, menthol, licorice, pine and licorice are some of the signatures in the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. Bold, ripe and flamboyant, the 2013 is one of the few wines in this vintage that won't require considerable time in bottle to drink well. As always, this is an especially opulent, ripe style.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is starting to close down after being bottled. There are 400 cases of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, which was aged in 100% new French oak for 27 months. This is a collector’s item that reminds me of a Soda Canyon version of the great Philip Togni’s Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain. Dense purple to the rim, with plenty of crème de cassis and hints of forest floor, truffle and white flowers, the wine is spicy, rich, multi-dimensional, with beautiful purity and a finish of close to 45+ seconds. This is great stuff, but it needs another 3-4 years of bottle age and should drink well for 20 or more years.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is dense, powerful and creamy, with tons of richness throughout. Crème de cassis, graphite, smoke, menthol and licorice meld together in an ample Cabernet Sauvignon that needs a few years in bottle to fully come together. As always, the Roy style is built on richness and extraction, which works very well here.

Intense, powerful and still very primary, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon could easily be mistaken for a younger wine. Hints of mocha, licorice, black cherries and blackberry jam open up in the glass, but only with great reluctance. Today, the Cabernet Sauvignon is raw and powerful to the core, with tons of energy that needs to be tamed. It will be interesting to see where the 2013 is a year from now.
