Punteggio 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2009

(a blend of 70% syrah and 10% each mourvedre, petite sirah and petit verdot) Bright aromas of black fruits, licorice and pepper lifted by flowers and spices. Juicy and lively in the mouth, with very good cut and acidity to the peppery syrah-driven flavors. Finishes with sweet tannins and good lift. This penetrating, rather raw syrah style reminded me of a Saint-Joseph. Try it with a big steak.

Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2008-2015, Robert Parker, Dec 2008

A blend of 70% Syrah and the rest equal parts Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Petit Verdot, the 2007 Sainte Fumee (382 cases) boasts an inky/purple color in addition to a floral-infused blackberry and blueberry-scented nose with a hint of toasty oak. Considerable power, elevated glycerin, a fleshy, full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long finish suggest it will drink well for 5-7 years. (Not yet released) Known as Behrens and Hitchcock until the departure of Bob Hitchcock, this artisinal winery on the top of Spring Mountain has changed its name to Erna Schein. The proprietors, Les and Lisa Behrens, continue to fine tune an intriguing portfolio of wines. Because of disappointing results from synthetic closures, they have now gone back to traditional cork. Lisa is widely regarded as one of Napa’s most capable viticulturists, and appears to have a knack for finding forgotten vineyard treasures. In addition to the name change, the Behrens seem to be moving away from varietal names, using instead a series of colorful, often provocative labels. All the following wines are flavorful, exuberant, full-bodied offerings made with indigenous yeasts, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. They represent true low-tech wines. Tel.
