Note di degustazione
A deep, implosive wine, the 2010 Pinot Noir Klopp Ranch is endowed with serious depth and power. Here, too, the fruit is wonderfully pure, but the wine isn't as expressive as it could be. Despite its considerable beauty, the Klopp Ranch comes across as a bit overdone.

Full dark red. Sweet if slightly reduced aromas of brambly black raspberry, cola, mocha and leather. Broad, plush and rich, with dark berry flavors complicated by smoky soil tones, cocoa powder, spices, herbs and espresso. A bit youthfully aggressive and quite backward today, finishing with slightly dry-edged, dusty tannins. But this impressively deep, long pinot showed building sweetness as it opened in the glass and appears to have the stuffing for a graceful evolution in bottle.

I hadn’t tasted Merry Edwards’ wines in a few years, so it was great to get reacquainted with one of my favorite Russian River properties. This year, I was especially impressed with the appellation Pinots, which are the wines I would focus on, as the vineyard-designates aren’t always meaningfully better. Tel. (707) 823-7466; T.
