I loved the 2015 Syrah Scarpa and this sensational Syrah comes from the Phoenix Ranch vineyard in Coombsville. It was completely destemmed, fermented all in stainless steel, and spent 21 months in 40% new barrels. Olive tapenade, smoked meats, pepper, and assorted dark fruits all emerge from this classic, full-bodied, beautifully concentrated Syrah that can be drunk anytime over the coming decade. Created in 2001 (where they were focused on Pinot Noir), Relic is owned by Mike Hirby and wife Schatzi Throckmorton. They’ve just completed work on a new winery and the 2015 vintage is the first vintage made all at the new facility.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Syrah Scarpa (coming from Coombsville) is scented of blackberries, black currants and dark chocolate with hints of garrigue and tar. Full-bodied, concentrated and possessing a solid backbone of firm, rounded tannins, it fills the mouth with spicy layers and finishes long and perfumed.
