Punteggio 92/100 · The Wine Advocate, May 2018

The 1973 Chappellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is pale brick in color and explodes from the glass with a powerful perfume of potpourri, licorice, oolong tea and kirsch with touches of molten rocks, hoisin and unsmoked cigars plus a touch of cloves. Medium-bodied with a taut frame of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, it gives layer upon layer of savory, spice and fruits notes, finishing very long and incredibly perfumed. (LPB)

In any other setting, the 1973 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon would have probably shown better, but the table was full of great bottles, including the iconic 1969. On this night , the 1973 shows good balance, but it also comes across as a bit mature and dried out.

Wonderful remnant from another era for Napa Valley, when Philip Togni was winemaker at this relatively high-altitude estate. Still firm pale crimson. Light to medium body. Fragrant claret with real subtlety and satisfaction. Beautiful balance but bears no resemblance to 90% of Napa Cabernet made this century. (JR)

The 1973 Chappellet Cabernet Sauvignon came across as incredibly tight and powerful, with considerable upside still to be realized! Tar, licorice, smoke and a host of dark aromas and flavors lingered on the finish. It was a towering Cabernet. (AG)
