Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2019-2030, Neal Martin, May 2019

The 2002 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from a period when I feel that Dugat had a tendency to slightly over-extract their wine. Deep in colour, it has a dense, smudged bouquet, a mélange of red and black fruits, becoming almost pastille-like with aeration. There is a light oyster shell scent that becomes apparent, though it always remains quite glossy. The palate is well structured and, like the nose, feels quite dense and sinewy. There is a sense of “mass” to this Charmes-Chambertin that delivers an attractive redcurrant and cranberry, almost confit-like on the finish. In summary, this is a wine that I admire rather than enjoy. Tasted at the Gevrey-Chambertin lunch at China Tang in Hong Kong.

Ruby-red. Explosively perfumed, sappy aromas of black cherry, raspberry, licorice and flowers. Extremely tight for this cuvee, with sappy cherry, raspberry and floral flavors, with strong minerality adding to the impression of precision. This, too, has a tightly coiled spring. Boasts an extraordinary finish, with palate-staining flavors of iron and gunflint outlasting the suave tannins.

The magnificently expressive 2002 Charmes-Chambertin boasts a floral, spicy nose packed with fresh red fruits. Spicy, concentrated, powerful, yet elegant, this cherry-dominated, medium-bodied wine exhibits spice box ands coffee notes in its extensive finish. Harmonious, refined, and extroverted, it is a candidate for drinking between 2006 and 2015. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083

Deep ruby-red. Explosive blackberry aroma lifted by a strong violet component. An impressively sweet wine with lovely clarity and verve. Extremely primary, pure and fine; tightly wound today. The violet and bitter chocolate notes are joined by exotic spices on the very long, firm aftertaste. The yield here was about 30 hectoliters per hectare, says Dugat.
