The 2012 Meritaggio Estate, David Arthur's Sangiovese-based blend, is quite pretty. Dark red and black stone fruits, mint, spices and licorice jump from the glass, all buffered by a good kick of acidity from the Sangiovese. Drink this attractive red over the next handful of years.

(a blend of 54% cabernet sauvignon, 28% sangiovese, 10% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 3% cabernet franc): Bright red-ruby. Musky aromas of sour cherry, plum, violet, licorice pastille and spices. Sweet and fresh, with dark berry, licorice and dark chocolate flavors nicely framed by sound, harmonious acidity. Finishes with firm, building tannins. This is quite lively for New World wine but should nonetheless drink well early. A major step up from the 2011.
Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and licorice flesh out in the 2012 Meritaggio Estate, a wine that brings together the raciness of the vintage with considerable underlying structure. The vibrant acidity of Sangiovese adds brightness. In 2012, the blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Sangiovese, 6% Merlot and 3% each Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
