Succulent black cherry, crème de cassis, inky purplish fruit, mocha, spice and gravel saturate the palate as this plush, intense wine shows off its personality and pedigree. Still quite primary, the 2014 needs at least a few years in bottle. Even at this early stage, though, it is quite special. The Oakville Farmhouse emerges from a tiny parcel on the lower slopes of Oakville just behind To-Kalon. The 2014 is much more polished than the 2013, which is a behemoth. In a word: dazzling.

A real discovery by Peterson that’s almost hard to believe, a tiny, 2.5-acre property sitting below Bill Harlan and Tom Futo’s vineyards and wineries at the southern edge of the To Kalon Vineyard produces the Oakville Farmhouse Heritage blend. The 2014 Proprietary Red Oakville Farmhouse Heritage is a field blend of Negrette, Zinfandel, Mondeuse, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Ruby Cabernet. The vineyard was once owned by H.W. Crabb, founder of the To Kalon Vineyard, and was planted back in the 1880s and called Black Burgundy. This is a dense purple wine, with plenty of crème de cassis, rather classic blackberry notes, licorice and white flowers. It is a beautiful wine, full-bodied, intense and savory, with no hard edges. This is an amazing lost story of Napa’s history brought to life in a dramatic and flamboyant way by Morgan Twain-Peterson. Drink it over the next 4-5 years.
