Punteggio 98/100 · Da bere 2020-2045, Jeb Dunnuck, Aug 2020

The fourth vintage for this cuvée, the 2017 Graciano is 88% Graciano, 6% Mourvèdre, 4% Petite Sirah, and 2% Viognier that spent 27 months in one-third new French oak. This inky hued beauty boasts a massive core of blueberry and cassis fruit as well as complex notes of sandalwood, cured meats, white pepper, and candle wax that all soar from the glass. With its full-bodied richness, silky tannins, good acidity, and a monster of a finish, this powerful, opulent beauty certainly offers pleasure today, yet it has the backbone and depth to evolve for 20-25 years. Give it a healthy decant if drinking any time soon.

The 2017 The Third Twin Graciano is a total show stopper, and that's saying a lot in this lineup from Elaine and Manfred Krankl. Dark, powerful and savory, the 2017 boasts off the charts richness and tremendous intensity. An exotic mélange of dark fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and espresso builds into the huge finish. The blend is 88% Graciano, 6% Mourvèdre, 4% Petite Sirah and 2% Viognier. The Krankls have clearly created something special here. All I can say is: Wow!

This is the fourth edition of this single-vineyard wine, coming entirely from The Third Twin vineyard in Los Alamos, further showcasing not only the potential of this amazing site but of this grape variety in the region. It is a blend of 88% Graciano, 6% Mourvèdre, 4% Petit Sirah and 2% Viognier, employing 10% whole clusters. It was aged for 27 months in French oak, 33% new. Very deep purple-black colored, the 2017 Graciano charges out of the gate with blueberry preserves, blackberry pie, baked plums and fruitcake notes plus underlying charcoal, tobacco leaf, scorched earth, licorice and bouquet garni hints. Full-bodied, the rich, seductive black and blue fruit preserves flavors are well-supported by enticing tension, creating—along with a firm, grainy texture—impressive energy in the mouth. It finishes with great length and loads of savory sparks. Another one-of-a-kind masterpiece by the Krankls! Only 855 bottles (yes, bottles) were made.
