The 2018 Chardonnay EGW has gotten better and better in bottle since I first tasted it in 2020. It has soaring scents of persimmon, peach and apricot plus singular nuances of crème brûlée, autumn honey and panna cotta. The full-bodied palate is satiny and mouth-coating with kaleidoscopic flavors. Despite its power, vibrant acidity adds a shimmery feel, and it has an epically long finish. It’s notably youthful and has a long life ahead in the cellar.

A blend of Wente and Dijon clones. The Dijon clones are from Seven Springs south block. The Wente clone from Chehalem Mountain vineyard. Aged 12 months in 20% new French oak (Damy, light long toast) with deep lees, no bâttonage, and full malolactic conversion. Ripe Opal apples and peaches, pithy lemon phenolics, flinty reduction, toasty well-integrated oak, popcorn (without butter) and fresh zippy acidity. An opulent weightiness. Slightly shorter finish than the 2019 but still quite persistent. (SCJ)
This shows a very complete and complex style with a spectrum of very pure yellow citrus fruit to peach and pastry, as well as more savory, stony notes. The palate has convincing concentration and a fleshy build that carries ripe peachy flavors, as well as citrus. The oak is so well integrated. Drink over the next six years.
