Full dark red. Strong smoky minerality on the nose, with raspberry and spice notes emerging with air; less subtle than the Charmes today but more satisfying and expressive. Plush, fat and sweet on the palate, with the dark raspberry, spice, licorice and black pepper flavors currently dominated by saline minerality. Seriously dense, rich wine with a rising, palate-staining finish that throws off notes of underbrush, tobacco, iron and spices. The noble tannins owe largely to the high percentage of millerandé berries. A superb showing for this wonderfully silky wine, which will probably be for drinking after the Charmes.

Dark red with ruby reflections. Liqueur-like black cherry, wild mint, leather and pepper scents are wonderfully subtle and complex for such an obviously ripe wine. The highly concentrated, silky-sweet middle palate conveys a distinctly crunchy character to the flavors of dark raspberry and mint. Plush, broad and very ripe but classically dry in spite of its strong impression of sucrosité . Offers a remarkable combination of power and suavity and finishes extremely long, with fine-grained tannins. This wine will merit a score at the high end of my projected range if it develops a bit more tannic spine by the time it goes into bottle.

The 2014 Mazoyères Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has a very precise bouquet, similar to the Charmes-Chambertin, though the fruit here is a little darker and revealing attractive star anise scents with aeration, though very discrete. The palate is very well balanced and harmonious, just a little wood to be integrated on the finish; which is quite linear and structured with good length. It is somewhat reserved at the moment and I wonder whether the Charmes-Chambertin has the edge in terms of personality. We will see!
