Medium red. Sexy aromas of musky red fruits, game, leather and underbrush. At once lush and firm on entry, then firm and savory in the middle, showing more thrust and obvious backbone than the Charmes. Game, leather and spice flavors are joined by a burst of red fruits, licorice, coffee and menthol on the youthfully tight, even slightly tough, finish. This will need longer in bottle than the Charmes but should be at least as strong.

The 2010 Mazoyeres-Chambertin comes across as considerably more delicate and floral than the Chapelle. Sweet red berries, flowers and tobacco are woven together beautifully in a fabric of stunning beauty and sheer class. Sweet floral notes waft from the glass on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. It was great to meet up with Christophe Perrot-Minot, as I missed him last time around. Perrot-Minot is one of the most exciting domaines in Burgundy. Since 2006-2007 Christophe Perrot-Minot has begun to back away from the dark, concentrated wines he used to make, and the results are stunning. The fruit sees 5-7 days cold soak. Today Perrot-Minot does one punch down every two days, whereas previously he did three per day. In 2010 yields were down a whopping 45%. Over the last few years Perrot-Minot has expanded the range with a number of wines made from purchased fruit, including several that are sourced from Pierre Damoy. I tasted the Bourgogne, Gevrey and Chambolle from tank and the rest of the wines from barrel. I also tasted a number of 2009s that were fabulous. I will report on those wines in the April issue. (from all- millerande grapes and a yield of just 25 hectoliters per hectare, according to Perrot-Minot): Good deep red. Complex, expressive aromas of ripe strawberry, currant, minerals, flowers and spices. Powerful sweetness and strong ripe acidity give the middle palate outstanding energy but will need time in bottle to come into full harmony. Great verve to the dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes extremely long and penetrating. (I will wait to taste the Clos de Beze and Chambertin from bottle as both of these wines were at the end of their malolactic fermentations in November and full of gas.)
