Punteggio 91/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2014

(a blend of 48% carignan, 25% petite sirah, 15% tempranillo and 12% graciano): Good deep ruby-red. Aromas of cherry, mocha and sweet spices. Plush and quite ripe in the mouth, with a seamless texture and a lightly high-toned quality to the flavors of cherry, minerals and mocha. Plump, sweet and satisfying: Herold says that the wine's sucrosite comes from the barrels. I like this blend.

Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2013-2018, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Nov 2013

The 2011 Collide is another rich, juicy red from Mark Herold. Carignane takes the leading role in an expressive wine bursting at the seams with fruit, exuberance and pure personality. Dark red/purple fruit, cloves, menthol, lavender and licorice notes all take shape in a delicious, affordable wine to drink now and over the next few years. The 2011 is 48% Carignane, 25% Petite Sirah, 15% Tempranillo and 12% Graciano.

The 2011 Collide is 48% Carignan, 25% Petite Sirah, and the rest Tempranillo and Graciano. Fresh and light with more acidity, some charm, and lots of loamy, dusty, earthy, underbrush notes, it is a more earth-driven effort, and will undoubtedly be the most controversial of these three offerings. Mark Herold, a well-known consultant, first came to my attention because of the brilliant wines he produced under the name Merus, a brand that has been sold. He now fashions a line-up of interesting and off-beat, hip wines that are priced realistically for as good as they are. His selections called Flux, Acha and Collide are usually blends ranging from white Rhone varietals to red Rhone and Spanish varietals. At the top of the line are his flagship Cabernet Sauvignons called Herold and Herold by Mark Herold. The red wines include three vintages of the Flux, all basically 67-68% Grenache, 15-20% Carignan and the rest Petite Sirah in the case of the 2009, Syrah in the 2010, and Mourvedre in the 2011. Herold produces 1,200-2,000 cases of these cuvees, and at $30 a bottle, they are well-worth checking out. Mark Herold’s homage to Spain are his three vintages of Acha, which is made primarily from Tempranillo. At $40 a bottle, these are very good wines. The three vintages of Collide also bear a California appellation, but their blends differ dramatically in each vintage. Tel. (707) 256-3111
