(blended with 5% malbec; aged in mostly new French oak): Bright ruby-red. Aromatic, strongly oaky scents of cassis, licorice, mocha and bitter chocolate. Moderately dense but a bit green, with cassis and licorice flavors accompanied by herbs and menthol. Could use more depth and complexity. Finishes with slightly aggressive tannins.

Keever's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon impresses for its length and overall persistence. Sweet tobacco, autumn leaves, sweet spices, grilled herbs and black cherry notes meld together in a wine of distinction and personality. Given its mid-weight structure, the 2011 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. This is a beautiful wine in a challenging harvest.

Anticipated maturity: 2015-2026. (Not yet released) Keever owns six acres of vines in Yountville. Jim Barbour looks after the vineyards while Celia Welch makes the wines. The estate’s 2009 and 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon were even more impressive than they were last year, while the 2011 is a strong effort in a challenging vintage.
