Punteggio 95-98/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, Dec 2011

Tasted just prior to bottling, the 2009 Paul Lato Syrah Cinematique Larner Vineyard, aged for 19 months in 33% new French oak, is slightly less exotic than the Bien Nacido and exhibits gorgeous black and red fruits, grilled beef, lead pencil, and serious crushed rock and liquid mineral like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and impeccably balanced, with an elegant profile, beautifully concentrated mid-palate, and firm, polished tannin on the finish, this captivating Syrah should drink well for 10-12 years. The '09s from Paul are both unbelievably good and count yourself lucky if you were able to latch on to a few bottles.

(includes 5% co-fermented viognier): Inky ruby. Explosively perfumed bouquet evokes dark berry preserves, cola, violet and Indian spices, along with an exotic suggestion of apricot. Broad, sappy and intense, with serious thrust to its sappy blackberry and mulberry flavors. Finishes juicy, sweet and long, with lingering floral and spice notes. The malo stretched into May 2010 for this wine as well as for the Il Padrino.

The 2009 Syrah Cinematique Larner Vineyard comes across as a touch lean, but then again, I am pretty much convinced the potential of this site has yet to be fully tapped. The Cinematique is a big, powerful Syrah loaded with dark fruit and plenty of concentration but it is the rough, unpolished tannins that suggest the fruit isn't as pristine as it could be. I can only imagine what this wine could be.

I can only imagine what this wine might have been. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. I was blown away by the wines I tasted from Paul Lato. These are some of the most pure, thrilling wines being made in California today. The wines are available in a small number of high-end restaurants, including The French Laundry, or through the mailing list. For what it’s worth, I signed up right away. The Pinots are made from fully destemmed fruit, see a fairly lengthy cold soak of 7 days and are aged in 50-80% new oak. The Syrahs are also fully destemmed and co-fermented with 5% Viognier. They are also much smaller productions, so the amount of new oak is mostly driven by practical demands. The reds are lightly fined with egg whites and bottled unfiltered. Tel.
