A spectacular blend of 55% old vine Garnacha and 45% Carignan, the 2001 Mas Doix Priorat Costers de Vinyes Velles starts out tight and firm, yet blossoms beautifully with air to show thrillingly ripe aromas of blackberry liqueur, plum, licorice, pencil lead, and charcoal on the nose. While a big wine, it stays fresh and lively, never coming across as heavy or cumbersome. With a full-bodied, decadent texture, loads of integrated acidity, and a mineral edge that comes through and frames the finish, this gorgeous Priorat is still a baby in terms of development, and has another decade or more or longevity.

The 2001 DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles is the product of an outstanding vintage. The nose displays more tertiary notes including an amalgam of minerals, licorice, incense, black spices, and a confiture of black fruits. It still has a bit of tannin to lose but is very approachable now. Mas Doix has a story quite common in Priorat in which professional people living in the big cities return to reclaim the family heritage (and are having more fun than they ever did before). Mas Doix’s flagship cuvee is named DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles with an annual production of only 4-7,000 bottles. It is typically a blend of old-vine Garnacha and Carinena (80-108 years of age) with the proportions varying slightly from year to year. The wine is aged in 100% new French oak for 14-18 months. Very deep, youthful crimson. Some definite terroir character. Big and meaty. Pungent, gamey, lots of acidity and certainly savoury but a little light on finesse or freshness. All power and extract! Thick. This one needs a knife and fork. Lots and lots of alcohol. 50% Garnacha, 47% Cariñena, 3% Merlot. (JR)
