Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2015-2023, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2014

The 2011 Syrah Dusty Lane impresses for its length and persistence. Layers of black fruit, spices, violets and lavender - all typical of John Alban's Syrah clones - find a wonderful counterpoint in some of the more intense nuances typical of this cool-climate site. Explosive and layered on the palate, the 2011 simply dazzles today. Readers who can find the 2011 should not hesitate; it is magnificent.

Punteggio 93-95/100 · Da bere 2014-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2013

The 2011 Syrah Dusty Lane shows its characteristic aromatic lift and pure inner fragrance from the very first taste. Freshly cut flowers, sage, mint crushed rocks and dried red stone fruits all come to life in a vivid, utterly compelling Syrah. This is another drop dead gorgeous Syrah from Eric Sussman and Radio-Coteau that convinces with its purity and integrity rather than for its sheer power.

(made from the Alban clone, from fruit picked on November 1st and being raised in 30% new oak): Bright purple. Intense, smoke- and spice-accented aromas of dark berry liqueur, olive tapenade, cracked pepper and violet. Very syrah, offering sweet black and blue fruit flavors that show very good depth and power. Smoothly balances richness and vivacity and finishes with gentle tannic grip and excellent persistence.

This lineup from Radio-Coteau and proprietor Eric Sussman was among the most thrilling I tasted this year. Radio-Coteau practices sustainable farming and hands-off winemaking, which includes native fermentations, minimal rackings and bottling without fining or filtration. What ultimately counts, though, is what is in the bottle, and more often than not, these are compelling wines that deserve serious attention. Among many things, Sussman told me Syrah did better in 2011 than in 2010. Yields were down dramatically, but the fruit that was left was exceptional. Tel. (707) 823-2578
