Evolved and ready to go with complex and nuances aromas of black olive, pepper, and tobacco, the 2006 Wind Gap Wines Syrah Sonoma Coast is round and fleshy on the palate, with beautiful richness, a round, supple texture, and solid, integrated acidity. Lacking some of the edge and vibrancy of the '07 and '08, this quality, northern Rhone look alike should continue to shine for 4-6 years.

Inky purple. Seductive, intensely perfumed nose evokes blackcurrant, cherry pit, smoky peat and violet; smells like a cross of a northern Rhone wine and an Islay whisky. Impressively fresh raspberry and blackberry flavors are framed by zesty minerality and gentle tannins. Turns spicier on the finish, which is pure, focused and extremely long. No way that I'd have guessed this was from the New World.
Very Crozes-Hermitage-like, with notes of tapenade, roasted herbs, pepper, and black currants is the 2006 Syrah Sonoma Coast. This could pass for a dead ringer in a northern Rhone tasting with its acid and black olive characteristics. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. (Not yet released) This is the beginning project of Pamela and Pax Mahle. (They are shooting for a potential 3,500 cases with the 2008 vintage.)
