Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2016-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jun 2013

The 2011 Pinot Noir Clos Platt is dazzling. Sweet, perfumed red berries and dried rose petals all waft in the glass. This is a decidedly elegant, polished wine considering it is made from the Calera clones, which tends to yield much bigger wines. A subtle, intense perfumed Pinot, the Platt is simply stunning. All the elements are nicely balanced in this harmonious textured wine.

(50% new oak): Bright ruby. Heady aromas of candied dark berries and cherry-cola, with intense Indian spice and floral accents. Juicy, expansive and penetrating, offering vibrant black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that gain sweetness with air. Packs a serious punch but comes off lithe and precise, finishing with appealing sweetness and a touch of candied rose.

This lineup from Radio-Coteau and proprietor Eric Sussman was among the most thrilling I tasted this year. Radio-Coteau practices sustainable farming and hands-off winemaking, which includes native fermentations, minimal rackings and bottling without fining or filtration. What ultimately counts, though, is what is in the bottle, and more often than not, these are compelling wines that deserve serious attention. Among many things, Sussman told me Syrah did better in 2011 than in 2010. Yields were down dramatically, but the fruit that was left was exceptional. Tel. (707) 823-2578
