Now fully mature, the 2005 Brunello di Montalcino has reached its peak. Tobacco, smoke, game, earthiness, cedar, worn-in leather and mushrooms meld into a huge core of dark fruit. Despite its considerable intensity and strapping, virile personality, the 2005 is quite forward in its aromatics, so it is best enjoyed sooner rather than later, as the balance will only deteriorate from here.

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is straight-forward and supple in its pretty red cherries, spices and flowers, all of which come together in a soft, medium-bodied style. This is a surprisingly approachable Brunello, with generous fruit and impeccable harmony that make it a great choice for drinking over the next few years. The 2005 Brunello is a blend of fruit sourced from the winery's holdings in Podernovone (80%), south of Montalcino and Le Chiuse di Sotto (20%) on the north side of town.

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017. These are two exceptional Brunellos from the late Gianni Brunelli and his estate, Le Chiuse di Sotto. Readers who enjoy traditionally made Brunellos will find much to admire here. Importer: A.I. Selections, Astoria, NY; tel. (718) 777-2243
Very deep ruby with brown tinges and a narrow rim with orange brown tinges. Serious and quite complex, if subdued and peppery. Same compactness on the palate, with crunchy tannins. Acidity seems to emphasise the tannins at the moment, but it will settle. Complex finish. Slight doubt about its lifespan when the colour seems so developed already. (WS)
