The 2008 The Heavyweight is an intense, brooding wine. Today it comes across as introspective and shut down. Black fruit, tar, smoke and grilled herbs struggle to emerge from a wall of tannins that is impenetrable. If the wine finds its center it may merit a higher score, but it does not look likely at this point. The Heavyweight is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot.

(80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% cabernet franc): Good full ruby-red. Black cherry and licorice on the nose. Juicy, spicy and a bit youthfully tight; less obviously sweet than the 2008 Ode to Picasso bottling but boasts lovely ripeness to the redcurrant, graphite, spice and licorice flavors. Combines very good breadth and clarity. The cabernet sauvignon component is from Spring Mountain and Kenefick Ranch fruit.
