The inky/purple-colored 2007 Syrah Las Colinas offers notes of bacon fat, red and black fruits, tar, pepper, and meaty, full-bodied, rich flavors. Its tannin is largely concealed by the wealth of fruit and richness. Enjoy this beauty over the next decade. An artisanal winery run with meticulous attention to detail by Eric Sussman, Radio-Coteau continues to follow a fair pricing strategy for its high quality Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, Syrahs, and Zinfandels. As a postscript, Eric Sussman told me that his winery was certified biodynamic in 2008. All his fermentations are native (indigenous yeasts from the vineyard), he uses minimal SO2, minimal racking, extended lees contact, and bottles all his wines in house with no fining or filtration. Deep ruby with a bright rim. Intense aromas of candied red and dark berries, smoky bacon fat, minerals and violet face powder. Energetic raspberry and blackcurrant flavors are given a refreshingly bitter edge by licorice and black pepper, with silky tannins adding structure. A jolt of tangy minerals adds snap to the long, juicy finish. Drinkable now, but I'd resist opening this one for another three or four years. This is a blend of fruit from the Cherry Camp and Timbervine vineyards.
