A magical wine in the making, Bachelet's 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes soars from the glass with complex aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet soil tones, bergamot, peonies and violets. Full-bodied, layered and velvety, it's sumptuous and enveloping, with a broad and textural attack that segues into an ample, multidimensional and beautifully vibrant mid-palate, concluding with a long and perfumed finish.

Theoretically there would be eight barrels of the 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, but due to the dryness there are only five-and-a-quarter (exactly). This is exquisitely defined on the nose of crystalline red berry fruit laced with iodine and violet. The palate is very harmonious, featuring more black fruit than red, and very saline in the mouth, with a Mazoyères like structure on the finish. The benchmark Charmes-Chambertin remains... the benchmark.
Cask sample. Shallow soils here yielding a real charmer on the nose with notably sweet fruit and finesse. Maybe not quite as deep flavoured as Les Corbeaux. Perhaps slightly too sweet for some tastes? (JR)
