The 2001 Syrah Que Syrah Vineyard exhibits a personality not dissimilar from a moderately endowed French Crozes-Hermitage. Aromas of vegetation, currants, olives, and spice are followed by a medium-bodied, tangy, generally uninspiring Syrah with moderate fruit, good acidity, as well as an annoying herbaceous component in the flavors. Full, deep ruby. Wild, highly nuanced nose combines raspberry, black olive, bacon fat and pepper; Cote-Rotie meets Cornas. Then dense and chewy with extract, with pepper, smoke and licorice flavors that suggest Crozes-Hermitage. Distinctly peppery and French in style, finishing with firm tannins and good grip. The alcohol here is a moderate 13%.
