The 2003 Helena Montana Cabernet Sauvignon is richer, deeper and more voluptuous than the Helena Dakota. Inky blue/purple fruit, spice, graphite and lavender are all front and center in this sexy, voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon. Savory Knights Valley nuances underpin the fruit. Here, too, I would prefer to drink the 2003 sooner rather than later.

Bright medium ruby. Blackberry, cassis and violet aromas lifted by a peppery nuance; rather reduced. At once penetrating and pliant, with good intensity to the dark fruit and floral flavors. But I don't find the sweetness or breadth shown by a barrel sample a year ago. Finishes juicy and persistent, with firm but fine-grained tannins. Give this reduced wine plenty of aeration if you plan to serve it anytime soon.
Aged in 100% new French oak, the dense saturated purple-colored 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Dakota offers up beautiful scents of flowers, blackberries, blueberries, charcoal, hot rocks, and smoky new oak. Rich, full-bodied, and tannic, this impressive effort possesses a Bordeaux-like elegance and complexity. It represents a combination of North Coast Cabernet with Bordeaux freshness and elegance. (est. 50-$60) Full medium ruby. Highly aromatic nose of cassis, violet, licorice, cocoa powder and black pepper. Supple and impressively sweet, but with terrific backbone under the intense black fruit flavors. A very broad, round wine that's not at all heavy. And not especially muscular for a mountain wine. Broadens out impressively on the back end. A very good showing for both of these Dakota vintages.
