Detert’s Cabernet Franc vineyard is essentially encircled by the famed Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, and their 2002 Cabernet Franc (14.5% alcohol) is a gorgeous example of this grape varietal. A deep ruby/plum/purple color is accompanied by sexy aromatics consisting of white chocolate, black currants, blackberries and a hint of underbrush. The wine possesses impressive fruit intensity, a savory, broad, medium to full-bodied mouthfeel and that ethereal delicacy that comes from Cabernet Franc (intensity without heaviness). This beauty exhibits excellent maturity, but does not appear to be in danger of falling off the table. It should keep for another decade. Tel. (707) 893-7262; Fax (707) 885-1612

The 2002 Cabernet Franc is delicate and quite pretty. Vestiges of Franc brightness remain, but the fruit has faded. The 2002 might hang on a bit longer, but its best days lie in the past. At the time, the 2002 was made from Detert's West Block, as the East Block bottling did not exist.
