The 2014 Cabernet Franc East Block is a rich, heavily extracted wine. Inky, sweet and dense, the 2014 exudes richness and power, but not exactly a lot of subtlety. Dark tonalities of fruit, smoke, graphite, chocolate and licorice are front and center. The huge tannins need time to settle down. As good as the 2014 is, I have to think more is possible. Detert is after all one of the historic parcels within To-Kalon. These wines need to be truly exceptional and not just outstanding.

The 2014 Cabernet Franc, which is an identical blend of 97% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, displays floral raspberry notes and a slightly more fruit-forward style without the depth and concentration of the 2013. Nevertheless, it is elegant and overall an excellent wine. Drink it over the next decade.
