Punteggio 96/100 · Da bere 2023-2033, Jeb Dunnuck, Jul 2021

Another Bennett Valley release, the 2017 Syrah Judge Vineyard offers lots of red and black berry-like fruits supported by ample ground pepper, gamey meat, and exotic flower-like aromas and flavors. Another medium to full-bodied, dense, rich, nicely concentrated Syrah, it has the classic elegance and balance that’s the hallmark of this estate. While I like it today, it will ideally be given another 2-3 years of bottle age and should impress for over a decade.

The 2017 Syrah Judge Vineyard has a medium ruby-purple color and bright red fruit aromas with accents of green olives, powdered sugar and violets. The palate is medium-bodied, bright and juicy with generous, savory fruits wrapped in a plush frame, and it finishes long and spicy.

The 2017 Syrah Judge Vineyard is one of the most complete wines in the Donelan range this year. Deep and powerful, with terrific persistence, the 2017 has a lot going on. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, cedar, spice, menthol, licorice and tobacco build with a bit of aeration. The Judge is savory, layered and full of character. Give it a year or two to come together a bit more fully.
