Punteggio 98/100 · Da bere 2019-2049, Jeb Dunnuck, Jul 2019

Another truly profound wine from this estate is the 2016 Chambertin Clos-de-Beze, which I think is even better than the Chambertin Grand Cru release. Possessing a riveting nose of deep red and black fruits, lit gunpowder, crushed rock, violets, and forest floor, it opens up with time in the glass and shows more floral and spice characteristics, yet never loses this incredible sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, and concentrated on the palate, it has a tight, vibrant, chiseled texture that's very much in the classic style of the vintage. Drink this magical, singular Clos de Bèze any time over the coming three decades or more.

Dark red-ruby. Knockout nose combines raspberry, cherry, game and saline underbrush, plus a whiff of torrefaction. At once fully ripe and delicate; in a distinctly more feminine style than the Mazis. The plush, rich yet elegant flavors of medicinal dark fruits, spices and exotic flowers are complicated by salty minerality. Less sweet in the early going than the Mazis, finishing precise, classic and extremely long, with serious but fully buffered tannins that melt into the palate.

100% new oak. Barrel sample. Very intense and special – vineyard into bottle! Very shaded and black-fruited. Majesty of the cru translated into liquid form. Essence-like. With very fine tannins and lots of subtle flavour – blackberries and crushed rocks? – underneath. Real lift. (JR)
