Punteggio 96/100 · The Wine Advocate, Dec 2007

As for their own wines, all of which come from southern Napa sites in Oak Knoll and Coombsville, the 2005 is certainly one of the finest wines they have yet made. A 1,000-case blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec, the wine is dense purple-colored to the rim, with an exquisite nose of charcoal, graphite, and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied, with great power, richness, and sensational length, this wine will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle-age and last three decades. (RP) 96+

Punteggio 92/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2006

(blended with 2% malbec and 1% petit verdot) Deep ruby-red. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, sweet butter and loam. Sweet, lush and sappy, with black cherry and graphite flavors offering very good definition and lift. Offers compelling sweetness and an almost liqueur-like ripeness, but this is more than simply a fruit bomb. Finishes with substantial ripe, broad tannins. "The 2002 version is more muscular and long-aging but the 2003 is flashier," notes Herold.

Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2007-2025, Robert Parker, Dec 2005

The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec and Petit Verdot) boasts an inky/purple color along with a rich bouquet of creosote, blueberries, blackberries, sweet earth, and smoky, spicy oak. With full body, abundant fruit, glycerin, and sweet tannin, a multilayered mouthfeel, and stunning upside potential, it is accessible enough to be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for two decades. The flagship estate of Mark Herold and his wife, Erika Gottl, Merus produced 750 cases of the 2003, and there will probably be even less of the 2004. This cuvee admirably showcases Herold’s winemaking philosophy as well as skills - late harvesting, super-ripe fruit, aging in 100% new French barrels (usually Taransaud), and bottling without fining or filtration after 18-20 months of cellaring. It’s a philosophy built on patience as well as labor. Herold’s success with such new projects as Buccella, Hestan Vineyards, Harris Estate, and Kamen is further evidence that the man knows what to do in the vineyard and the winery. Tel.
