This is a particularly interesting 1855 story, because the estate was owned by the Casteja family of merchants at the time of the classification, and would remain with them until 1937 (it would change hands five times until the Rothschilds arrived in 1962).Over time part of the estate was split off by the Castéjas, and it now forms Château Haut-Bages Monpélou, explaining why it's such an insider Pauillac to know about. Anyway, back to Duhart-Milon, and this is a brilliant 2009, luscious and generous, harnessing the joy of this vintage, and delivering it with classid graphite, crayon and mint leaf Pauillac character. 50% new oak, Philippe Dhalluin director.

You can't go far wrong with this superb 2009. Has a kick in its step compared to many vintages of Duhart around this time, which tend to be a little more austere and buttoned up. This is infused by the generosity of the vintage, without going too far from its signature Pauillac reticence, delivering graphite, cedar, sandalwood, cassis, brambled blackberries and tons of cigar box and sage spice. Philippe Dhalluin director, under Rothschild ownership since 1962. Definitely in its drinking window, but going nowhere anytime soon.

Magnum – was that why it tasted so beautiful? Subtle, fragrant and slightly floral. Racy and transparent – a very good Duhart! Tannins fully resolved. Very persistent. Very refreshing for a 2009. So good, and so relatively inexpensive, that I made it a wine of the week . (JR)
