Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2019-2029, Tom Parker MW, jancisrobinson.com, Sep 2019

Made since 1966 (Napa’s first vineyard-designated wine) from the Martha’s Cabernet clone; malo blocked despite long ageing in barrel. Still a deep ruby colour, and still primary on the nose. Lots of juicy black fruit with a little earthiness and a touch of savoury spice. Finely structured, the tannins are well integrated and give a slick, plump mouthfeel. The fruit shines but there is a hint of undergrowth and toasted spice here too. Showing much younger than I would expect – perhaps the 2012 will age longer than my drinking window suggests. (TP)

Tightly knit and backward, the 2002 Martha’s Vineyard offers hints of black cherries, black currants, earth, new saddle leather and spice box. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated as well as high in tannin, this youthful effort no longer reveals this cuvee’s famous eucalyptus aroma, but it does not lack for power, richness or aging potential. Drink it over the next 20+ years. Tel. (707) 963-3542; Fax (707) 963-7454

Classic Martha’s, with red fruits, mint, eucalyptus and leafy herbs on the nose and palate. Also typical: a taste of a chocolate-covered cherry. Herb tinged, balanced and with brisk acidity. (LM)
