Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Cap de Mourlin comes galloping out of the glass with bold notes of baked black plums, blackberry preserves and fruitcake with fragrant suggestions of eucalyptus, lavender and Chinese five spice. The medium to full-bodied palate is coated with spicy black fruit preserves, featuring a lively line and soft, well-managed tannins, finishing with a peppery kick.

The 2018 Cap de Moulin has developed one of the more ostentatious bouquets within the Saint-Émilion appellation, featuring layers of cassis, boysenberry and tinned prune, and just missing some of the definition that I was hoping for in barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with tarry black fruit, lacking a bit of acidity compared to its peers, with some dryness on the finish. This needs to develop more flesh in bottle.
A rock-solid, fruit-loaded, classic Saint-Emilion, the 2018 Château Cap De Mourlin offers lots of spiced currant and cherry fruits as well as notes of chocolate, gravelly earth, and tobacco. It's rich and medium to full-bodied, with a rounded, supple texture and a great finish. Drink it over the coming decade.
The 2018 Cap de Mourlin has not come together during élevage, sadly. It remains compact and harsh, with searing tannins and not a lot of finesse.
