Here's another bottle that brings us back in time. The 2004 Castel del Monte Aglianico Bocca di Lupo is a tarry and thick wine with an inky black, impenetrable appearance. The wine possesses a deep and velvety texture and the aromas are dark and savory with black fruit, prune, licorice and scorched earth. It shows large shoulders and an expansive personality despite its age. More asphalt and crushed river stone appear on the close. Its aging seems to have slowed down to a snail's pace at this stage. The concentration remains generous and abundant. This bottle might have a few more good years left inside.

100% Aglianco – more confident about the vineyards in this vintage – some old, some new. Deep ruby. Much more exciting nose than the 2001: spice and pepper and tobacco. Almost a touch floral too but with pure dark blackberry fruit. Black fruit but not cassis. Wonderful fruit purity and complex mix of fruit and spice, even a little minty. Firm, thick and chewy on the palate, dark, some more savoury character, a deep-pile texture but rounded tannins. On the palate there is a really savoury black-olive flavour. 70% new oak (these days down to 30%). Chewy, rich and deep and still powerful. (JH)
