A wonderful curiosity, the 2005 Ca Togni must be tasted to be believed. The explosive aromatics and sweet but never cloying flavors are quite special as well as unusual. I've never met anyone who didn't love this cuvee and I'm glad that Philip Togni continues to produce it, even if there are only tiny quantities available. The 2005 should drink well for 3-5 years. The venerable Philip Togni continues to build an impressive resume on Spring Mountain where he produces long-lived red wines as well as a tiny quantity of a remarkable, sweet elixir from Black Muscat grapes, the Ca Togni. (for 375 ml.) Good medium-deep red. Captivating bouquet of red fruits, dried rose and maple syrup. Thick but not at all heavy, with a velvety texture leavened by a note of orange peel. Utterly seamless sweet wine in a gentle style, with surprising freshness to its red fruit flavors. Finishes with a whiplash of flavor and very good grip. Perhaps not quite as complex as the 2004, but this is always one of the North Coast's most singular and seductive sweet wines. I'd savor this on its own. Togni picks berry by berry and adds a bit of grape spirits to make this wine, which comes from the black hamburgh grape. The short crop in 2005 limited production to just a barrel and a half-one of which is now 30 years old.
