Deep, intense, powerful. Youthful and scented with layers of delicious red and black fruit beneath. Plus, the all-important earthiness that connects this to a place. It's drinking now in terms of structural balance but has many years left in terms of potential complexity. (RH)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a slightly deeper colour than its peers. It has a comparatively intense nose with bold black cherry and boysenberry fruit and just a hint of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins and that chocolate tincture interlacing the red fruit with a sweet figgy finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a tightly-knit bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, sous-bois , veins of dark chocolate and freshly-rolled tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, grainy texture, well balanced with a fresh, marine-influenced finish. Not the length of recent vintages, yet it has commendable focus and sense of energy.
