The 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru was showing a little smudged on the nose when I tasted it from barrel, and it did not really get both hands on the terroir. The palate is better with sappy red berry fruit and quite firm, rigid tannin that lend this good backbone, although the finish feels a little static at the moment—masculine and slightly hard. Hopefully it will mellow and gain more precision by the time of bottling. It falls short of expectations at the moment.

(Charlopin has a long strip of vines on the south side of the Clos): Bright medium ruby. Sexy, perfumed nose offers scents of black cherry, spices, licorice, wild herbs and soil; there was less stress here thanks to the combe influence, noted Charlopin. Tight-grained, very concentrated and slightly high-toned, offering serious energy and lift to its black cherry, spice and earth flavors. This juicy, intensely flavored Clos Vougeot finishes firmly tannic but not hard and appears to be a standout in 2015.
