Note di degustazione
100% Zibibbo. Dried grapes added to the fresh must in several batches – roughly 4 to 1 ratio of fresh to manually destemmed sun-dried grapes. Aged in tank and bottle. RS 195 g/l, TA 7.8 g/l, pH 3.83. Deep golden brown. Less aromatic than the 2010 just tasted. Dates and more dates! Luscious, super-intense caramelised apricot and quince. Sumptuous and still deliciously fresh. Just a hint of molasses on the finish. (JH)

Lots of new changes characterize this vintage. Most importantly, Donnafugata inaugurated a new winery in the Khamma area of Pantelleria. The family's vineyard holdings had blossomed to 11 different vineyard sites, allowing for micro vinifications and more control on the wine's style and quality. With the 2006 Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryé, the Punta Karace, Arco dell'Elefante and Martingana vineyards start to emerge as the top growing sites. This year also saw steep diurnal temperature shifts that contribute to the wine's complexity and acidity. The 2006 vintage also starts to feel young (compared to the previous wines in this vertical) and promises a long drinking window. The wine is fleshed out and generous.
The estate's Passito di Pantelleria Ben Ryè is one of Italy's most famous sweet wines. Ben Ryè is made from Zibbibo grown on the volcanic soils of the island of Pantelleria. The 2006 offers attractive up-front fruit in its mineral-infused prunes, spices, candied orange peel, dried figs and raisins but ultimately comes across as heavy and lacking the complexity that defines Italy's finest dessert wines.
