Slightly darker colored than other wines in the retrospective, the 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape had a touch of oxidation in its buttered-citrus, hazelnut, spice-cabinet and old-furniture bouquet. Still impressive on the palate, though, with beautiful depth of fruit and a layered, balanced texture, it's hard to say where this is going with any degree of certainty, but my gut says continue to cellar.

Pale gold color. Spicy and deep but highly aromatic and fresh on the nose, with youthful suggestions of crushed grapes, chlorophyll and mint. Dense, spicy and intense in the mouth; quite light on its feet. Flavors of lemon, peach and grapefruit are given clarity by refreshing acidity. Finishes firm and persistent.

This Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate is one of the Rhône’s most famous addresses. With a history stretching back to the 16th century, Beaucastel remains family owned and run, with the fifth generation of the Perrin family – Marc, Pierre, Thomas, Cécile, Charles, Matthieu and César – at the helm today.
