Crushed ashen stones and dusty black cherries meet nuances of sage and balsamic spice as the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah Ovide blossoms in the glass. Textural and juicy, with a bitter tinge to balance, this impresses with its energy and savory dark red fruit character. The 2019 stains the palate with youthful concentration and exotic spices, finishing gently tannic and resonant with black raspberry tones. The Ovide is a beast in need of taming, mixing accents of the Old World and the New. It's a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% whole-cluster Syrah from Jack's Vineyard in the Rocks District.

The 2019 Ovide is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon but includes 21% Syrah, all from the Jack's Vineyard in Walla Walla. Brought up in 50% new French oak, it has a peppery, gamey, meaty style as well as impressive red and black fruits, medium to full body, a ripe, balanced, mouthfeel, and a great sense of freshness and purity. I like it today, but it has more than enough tannins and concentration to evolve for 10-12 years or more.
