The 2011 Pinot Noir West Block is pure structure. A powerful, tannic wine, the 2011 is going to require quite a bit of patience. It has impressive length and persistence but this is another wine that desperately needs time in bottle. Still, there is a lot to like about the wine's textural elegance and depth. The fruit is so rich the 80% French oak isn't even notable.

Full ruby. Explosively perfumed scents of blackberry and cherry-cola, complicated by Asian spices, vanilla, mocha and fresh rose. Intense red berry flavors show an elegant quality, with balancing minerality adding focus and lift. Fine-grained tannins come on late and are absorbed by the juicy red fruit. Finishes bright, subtly tannic and long, with resonating spice and floral elements. (JR)

The fruit is so rich, the 80% French oak isn’t even notable. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. Tom Rochioli describes 2011 as a cold vintage with lower ripeness and alcohol levels than the norm. Considering these are usually fairly rich, bold wines (the style Rochioli prefers), the combination of a cooler year and the inherent depth that is the house signature is particularly appealing. Tel.
