Full red-ruby. Complex, vibrant nose combines redcurrant, brown spices, flowers, minerals and crushed stone (the vines are planted on bedrock). Enters the mouth thick but shapely, then shows terrific mid-palate sweetness and richness leavened by penetrating but integrated acidity. Excellent spine here but the tannins are quite suave for Howell Mountain. Perhaps most impressive today on the very long, sweet, energetic aftertaste, which features a note of bitter chocolate. Under the winemaking of Thomas Brown, this bottling has become one of Howell Mountain's elite cabernets in recent years.

The single vineyard 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon True Vineyard exhibits fabulous aromas of white flowers, graphite, crushed rocks and sweet blueberry, black currant and black raspberry fruit. Precise and full-bodied with layers of concentration, minerality and structure, this stunning 100% Cabernet Sauvignon should drink well for 25-30 years. Proprietors Kathy and Frank Dotzler along with winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown have quickly pushed this estate high on Howell Mountain to one of the leaders of that appellation. These wines all possess considerable character and the 2008s have certainly lived up to my forecast from last year, especially the Cabernets, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Tel. Good deep ruby. Very dark aromas of blue- and blackberry. Dense, intense and sweet, with terrific concentration and peppery lift to the black fruit and licorice flavors. Seems more generous-or at least more pliant in its youth-than the 2007, but with no heaviness. Finishes with mouthcoating tannins that are finer than those of the 2008 Howell Mountain cuvee
