(14.4%): Bright ruby with a dark rim. Sexy if rather feral nose and palate combine briary blackberry, blueberry, game, leather, coffee and animal fur, plus a whiff of gunflint. Silky, smoky and wild in the mouth, with the gunflinty minerality providing lift. I would have picked this blind as a mature European wine. À point right now but should go on for several more years.

The 2000 Petite Syrah Hayne Vineyard is off the charts in terms of extract and richness. Its impenetrable black/blue/purple color is followed by scents of incense, cassis, minerals, blackberry liqueur, and graphite. This monstrously full, rich, and textured wine needs 10-12 years of cellaring, and will keep for 35-40 years. (Release date 10/02) Tel. (707) 963-0940; Fax (707) 963-8683
Saturated dark ruby. Fresh, deep aromas of kirsch and tobacco; smells a bit like ruby port. Penetrating and sharply focused, but quite closed today. Not especially sweet or fleshy despite its 15.1% alcohol. Rather stubbornly backward and firmly tannic on the finish.
