Released in January of this year, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley has a deep, Saint-Estèphe-like (for some reason I always find these Old World comparisons in Andy’s wines) character in its pure, deep black and blue fruits, graphite, and lead pencil aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, terrific freshness, and a building sense of minerality, it’s certainly approachable today, yet is going to evolve gracefully for two decades or more. I still remember tasting with Andy Smith while I was writing The Rhône Report and I was thrilled to be able to sit down and go through all of his wines on this occasion. Stylistically, Smith makes a fresh, vibrant style of wine, yet I never find them lacking for depth and or texture. Looking at the Chardonnays, these are made in a reductive, age-worthy style and the clear majority have distinctly Burgundian profiles. These are beautiful wines that, at least to my palate, surpass the quality of the Pinot Noirs, which are slightly more variable. Nevertheless, the top Pinot Noirs are certainly up with the crème de la crème of the region. While Andy favors a tight, age-worthy style of Chardonnay, the Pinot Noirs are made in a slightly more forward style. In addition to the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, DuMOL also produces a handful of world-class Syrahs, as well as one of the top examples of Viognier coming out of California. Both the 2015s and 2016s reviewed here are terrific wines, with the 2016s showing slightly more balance and elegance, but you can’t go wrong with either vintage here.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley delivers notions of cassis, plum preserves, redcurrants and black cherries with touches of eucalyptus, violets and cedar. Full-bodied, the palate is beautifully concentrated without heaviness, sporting firm, fine-grained tannins and great freshness, finishing long and savory.

Du Mol's 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is plump, juicy and open-knit, all qualities that make it a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next few years. A rush of bright red cherry, plum, pomegranate, mint, wild flowers and chocolate meld together. Even with all of its intensity, the 2015 offers a good bit of freshness in its aromatics. I would give the wine a year or two in bottle to fully come together. Today, the new oak is a bit prominent. The Napa Valley Cabernet is a blend of fruit from Meteor, Reve and Ballard.

Tasted from barrel (of which there are just six), the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Coombsville possesses off the charts richness, power and intensity. An exotic mélange of inky blue/purplish fruit, graphite, smoke and licorice takes hold of all the senses. Dramatic, rich and all-encompassing, the 2015 captures all the best qualities of this freakish Napa Valley vintage.
