A more modern styled cuvée, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Folie is 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that’s all from the pebbly soils of the Mont-Redon lieu-dit, from a parcel called “La Folie”. This cuvée is always completely destemmed and brought up mostly in demi-muids, with 10% in new barrels. Black raspberries, graphite, vanilla oak and hints of violets give way to a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated red that has plenty of mid-palate depth and present, yet ripe tannin. It's a beautifully balanced, pleasure-bent effort that will benefit from a year or more of bottle age and keep through 2027. There are a scant 250 cases produced. This estate is managed by the larger than life Nicolas Boiron and his wines span the gauntlet from very traditional and old-school (Chante le Merle) to polished and modern (La Folie). This common theme across all the releases is incredibly high-quality.

A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that's raised in a combination of demi-muids and barriques, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape la Folie boasts sumptuous aromas of vanilla and toasted almond, then adds in just enough cherry fruit to keep things lively. This full-bodied wine is rich and velvety in texture, undeniably woody, but it looks so, so promising.

Brilliant ruby-red. Powerful, mineral-accented raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by suggestions of incense, vanilla and pungent flowers. Supple and impressively concentrated, offering sweet red berry, cherry liqueur and lavender pastille flavors lifted by juicy acidity and a jolt of white pepper. Plush yet lively; finishes on an emphatic floral note, showing excellent clarity and fine-grained tannins that build slowly.

Montredon. 80% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre. From a parcel of 100-year-old vines known as ‘La Folie’ on the plateau of Mont Redon. Grapes are destemmed. Vinification at 26 °C in concrete tanks . Aged for 18 months, 90% in demi-muids and 10% in new barriques. Tasted blind. Healthy crimson. Very sweet start and some perceptible oak. Just slightly too heavy for comfort. A bit soupy. (JR)
